Viewer Question: What cable to use to angle up HTPC to HDTV?

Viewer Question: What cable to use to angle up HTPC to HDTV? On YouTube.

Our Viewer Question is from Mark of City of Industry, CA: I just built a HTPC with a core 2 duo 2.66 GHz, PQI 2 GB of RAM and a Nvidia EVGA 8800gts. I have a Sony Bravia KDL32M3000. Anyhow, I would love to hook up my HTPC to the TV What kinda cable would I need to do this? I am also getting a Blu-Ray dvd drive for my pc. Will my specs play high def dvds at full frame without any lag? Mark, Jason Cross has got you covered. Your specs are good to handle Blu-Ray. As for the cable, get a DVI to HDMI cable or a DVI to HDMI adapter. However, you will need seperate cables for audio.

Mac Media Center

Mac Media Center

Hdmi

In this article I am going to take you through the steps of building a Mac Media Center. Since Apple annoucned the Mac Mini every one has been talking about building a Mac Media Center and using a Mac Mini to do it with.Which Mac Should You Get?There are a number of Mac's on the market, and you need to consider who you will use your Mac Media Center in order to decide on which Mac will suite your needs the best.

The Mac Mini

The Mac Mini seems the obvious solution for a Mac Media Center. It's small design, and low noise and heat makes it a great candidate to fit in with your existing mix of stylish audio equipment. The Mini is a great little device, it has a nice processor, a DVD drive, some hard drive space and enough ports to plug it into all the additional equipment you need. The last thing you need is a big ugly tower case, with noisy fans to sit next to your TV and destroy whatever audio fidelity you are trying to enjoy. And the Mac Mini has some sex appeal too.

The iMac

The iMac is also a good candidate for a Mac Media Center, although it's appeal is slightly different from that of the Mac Mini.In a limited space environment the iMac can server a dual purpose. It can be used as a desktop machine by day, and be switched to a Mac Media Center by night. The iMac comes in various sizes, from 17" to 24" so depending on the space you have avalible, and where you want to put it you have a few options. The iMac comes standard with just about everything you will need to use it as a Mac Media Center.

The Rest of the Mac Pac

The Mac Pro, iBook, and Mac Book Pro aren't really as versitile as the Mac Mini and iMac, but can none the less be used as a Mac Media Center. The 17" Mac Book Pro would make a nice mobile entertainment system, but not a dedicated media center.Using a Mac Pro as a Mac Media Center is insane. It's a little like using a crow bar to open a can of beans. You'll need some hardware to go with the Mac Media CenterFor the purposes of the rest of the article I will use a Mac Mini as an example. I have a Mac Mini and have built a media center with it, so using my first hand experience will hopefully be a little more accurate than speculating on what is possible if you have x...y...z...There are a couple of things you will need to get your Mac Mini up and running as a Mac Media Center. Some of these devices are apple devices and some are generic devices. Some work well and some are just a disaster.

Remotes for your Mac Media CenterThe first device you will need to begin hunting for is a remote. Afterall, what good is a Mac Media Center without a remote that the family can fight about. There is the infamous Apple remote which comes with most Mac minis and iMacs. It's a small remote, but works well. It comes in typicall mac style. It's tiny, does everything you need it to do and has no fancy features. All in all it only has 6 buttons that allow you to control the entire Mac Media Center.

There are also a number of generic remotes available. Logitech have a bunch of remotes, some of which work well with Mac, and some that are PC only.I have a Microsoft keyboard and remote, and have been unable to get them going on the Mac.I would advise using the Mac remote. It small, and with ahlf a dozen buttons is actually quite easy to use.My DVD player's remote for instance has 47 buttons, most of which I have never used and I don't have the slightest inclination to find out how they work. You'll also need a keyboard for your Mac Media Center EditionOf course there are those times you need to input some data into the screen, like in iTunes for instance, you might need to punch in your password when purchasing content. No one wants to keep jumping off the couch to press a button, I mean we barely find the energy to get up for another beer.

Apple have a nice bluetooth keyboard that you can use from your couch. It looks like a normal Apple keyboard, yet it has no cables and just fits a couple of batteries at the back. This is a must for your media center. From time to time you NEED a keyboard and having to crawl out from under a warm blanket in the middle of winter can spoil the mood.Of course Logitech and a few other have keyboards that would work just as well. But pairing an apple bluetooth keyboard with the built in blue tooth in a Mac Mini is easier than making toast.Add some storage to your Mac Media CenterIf you have ever spoken to anyone about a media center for digital media, the word storage would have poped up a number of times. The Mac Mini at best will only have and 80GB hard drive, and when you are downloading movies, TV shows, music, adding your own CD's and dumping you digital pictures you can devour disk space rather rapidly. So before you know it, you'll be hunting for a storage device of sorts. Now you have a couple of options as far as storage is concerned.

You can either connect something directly to your Mac Media Center, like a USB or Firewire drive, or you can connect a Network Attached Storage Device. The difference really comes in, when you consider what it is you want to do with your storage. If you want storage purely for media content and want it to be available only to the Mac Media Center, then a USB or Firewire drive is a great option. But if you have more than one computer on your network, like most housholds today seem to have, you might want to consider a netowrk attached storage device, also know as a NAS.Software you will needOnce you have decided on which Mac you want to use, a Mac Mini in my case, and you have you remote, and keyboard ready, and you have some idea of where you are going with some extra storage in the not to distant future, you need to sit down and consider what software you want to use with your Mac Media Center.

You have a about a dozen options, I've looked at a bunch of them, and I've narrowed it down to 3 that I think you should consider. The best way to decide on which media center application you want to use is to install all 3, use them for a week or two and then make your decision. My Mac Mini came with front row, and that's what I decided to use.But here is a break down of the 3 I suggest:Front RowFront row is an apple application, and comes on most Mac Mini's.It's a simple interface, looks a lot like an iPod's interface and has that glass effect. It's a very cool interface, and makes your TV look like it's in a league of its own.Center StageCenter Stage is an open source application for a Mac Media Center. It's a good design and there's ongoing support and development for it.Center Stage is a lot more customisable than front row, and allows a number of skins to be installed. Center Stage also has aditional plugins to make your Mac Media Center do more.Just a friendly warning when using non-Apple software on an Apple machine, especially when it's open source. Make sure you run the stable version. Running a beta version could cause unwanted interuptions during your romantic movie which will result in a night on the couch.iTheatreiTheter is also an open source Mac Media Center.

It aims to work on just about every Mac ever. Well maybe not ever, but at least in the last couple of years.iTheater also has the best user interface (UI) out of the 3. It integrates a whole bunch of other features and can also display the weather.Add onsOnce you have your mac mini, you remote, keyboard, storage and UI sorted you need to consider some add-ons to make the whole media center thing a little more enjoyable.DVI-HDMI ConnectorTo enhance your picture viewing quality, and if your TV supports it, get a DVI to HDMI converter. The Mac Mini has a digital output, and if you can keep your output digital, straight into the TV then you will benefit from the video quality. While HDMI supports audio, DVI does not. So using a DVI to HDMI converter will drop your audio, but it will maintain your video. You can just use the audio minijack output from your Mac Mini to get audio to the TV.TVYour TV is not really and add-on, I can't imagine you having a media center without the TV. Like a car without an engine (I had one of those for a while and it's not so great). When choosing your TV, make sure your TV has some crucial components to accommodate a Mac Media Center. The most important is your input.

You need to, at the very least have a VGA input. HDMI is prefereable but VGA is a minimum.having audio in is another requirement. While you can get away with not having an audio input on your TV it'll only make your life a little more complicated.Audio out would be the last piece of a really nice puzzle. Being able to connect your TV directly to your sound system will enable you to control the audio volume on your Mac Mini from once central place.I'll be posting an article on HDTV soon. Have a look at http://www.shawnsweekly.com for more info.iTunesiTunes forms the foundation of your digital content.

I've been using Front Row, and it integrates nicely into iTunes. So when I flip through the menus, it's like flipping through iTunes on an iPod interface.Using iTunes means that you can download movies TV shows and music from the iTunes store.Once the media has been downloaded, you can access it and watch it with the click of a button. This is a very easy integration and is automatically done for you.Using iTunes to add your CD library to your computer is another great feature. And from your media center you can simply click the remote and play your entire music collection.AlternativesFor those of you who are anti-mac, and want to benefit from the Mac form factor, but want to run MythTV or Vista Ultimate, you can do that.Simply download bootcamp from Apple, load your favorite OS, setup your Media Center and off you go.The Mac Mini really offers you the best of both worlds. You can run Mac OSX, Windows, or Linux, and setup you Media Center the way you want.

Sony Bravia S-Series KDL-46S5100 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

Sony Bravia S-Series KDL-46S5100 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

Hdmi

Sony has an unsurpassed credibility when it comes to electronics. You probably aware that some its HDTVs are listed as the best HDTV in the market. Recently, the S-Series were launch and its Sony BRAVIA S-Series KDL-46S5100 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV is one of the best entry level LCD TV in the market. The 46-inch TV is great for any living room. Watching movies on the LCD TV is also great due to its immense size. Due to its large size, for those that require a TV in their small bedroom, it is recommended to get smaller size of LCD TV as a 46-inch may be too big for a bed room.

Featuring a Full HD capability, the KDL-46S5100 can utilize any HDTV signals as well as play it in its highest resolution possible. Third generation game consoles such as the Xbox 360 and the PS3 can be plugged in through the HDMI port available at the LCD TV. The Sony BRAVIA S-Series KDL-46S5100 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV offers three HDMI ports which are more than sufficient for most users. Connecting products supporting the BRAVIA Link technology is pain free with this TV as it supports the feature mentioned.

In addition to the HDMI port, various ports such as PC, S-Video, Component, Composite and many others are available on this unit. This allows appliances that do not support the HDMI feature to utilize some of the many ports available on the TV. A contrast ratio of 30000:1 allows the TV to produce a vibrant level of contrast and deep blacks are often attainable with this HDTV model.

Its glossy screen might produce some glare especially in a room heavily lit with sunlight. However, in a room made specifically for home theatre purposes, this S-Series HDTV proves to be some of the best HDTVs available in the market. There have been a lot of wonderful reviews given by owners of this model. They report of exceptional picture qualities produced by this unit in addition to some of the many features available with the television.

A known problem about the TV is of its HDMI connections. There are several reports of the TV unable to receive HDMI signals from its ports. However, do not fret as a quick call to Sony will solve the problem. Your HDTV might just need a software update, Sony will give you the update in a USB Thumb Drive. The thumb drive can then be plugged in to the USB port available at the back of the unit. Fast and Easy.

Your Sony BRAVIA S-Series KDL-46S5100 HDTV probably is going to be the center of attention when people visit your house, just wait their reaction when you turn it on. With Energy Star 3.0 technology, this LCD TV unit consumes less energy compare to any other competing products in the same category. At a price tag of less than 00, it is a great yet simple television which is great for those that do not require any fancy features on their televisions.

Key Features

Upscaling DVD Player via HDMI Connection: Upscaling DVD Player (via HDMI; cable sold separately) makes your existing DVDs look better on your HDTV by improving the picture quality to near high definition.

Precision Cinema Progressive Technology: Many other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level; the Sony Precision Cinema Progressive system, however, detects image changes at the pixel level. The picture is more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because special algorithms handle the different pixel behavior. The technology also employs separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from artifacts.

Multiple Format Disc Playback: View movies and photos and listen to music using this DVD player with multiple format playback.

Photo TV HD: Bring your photos to life and enjoy highly detailed, Full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080-pixel) images with the PhotoTV HD mode. PhotoTV HD works with select Sony cameras and this DVD player and HDMI output to fine tune sharpness, gradation, and color, displaying images that more closely match the look of printed photos.

Dolby Digital and dts Coaxial Digital Output: The DVP-SR500H includes support for enhanced audio formats from Dolby and dts and provides connectivity to some older receivers and televisions allowing the player to work with some audio systems. Also included is an analog audio two-channel output.

Multi-Brand TV Remote Control: Switching back and forth between remote controls while watching television or a movie is a hassle. The remote control included with the DVP-SR500H allows you to operate most major brands of television and this DVD player.

Precision Drive 3 System: Sony Precision Drive 3 assists in quickly correcting warping and surface layer issues on this DVDs for smooth playback.

Energy Star certified

Multiple-Disc Resume: Multiple-disc resume allows you to power on your player and return to the last scene you were watching on up to six of your most previously watched discs without having to search.

Meets ENERGY STAR Guidelines: Many home audio and video devices can use significant power, even when turned off and in standby mode. The DVP-SR500H, however, was built for energy efficiency.

Fast/Slow Playback with Sound: Fast and slow playback with sound lets you advance through scenes quickly without missing the dialog.

Child Lock (Tray Lock): A child lock feature help prevents children from accessing the DVD player's tray.

Does the Quality of HDMI Cables Matter?

Does the Quality of HDMI Cables Matter?

Hdmi

HDMI cables have created quite a stir in the AV world. It's a new digital format which has incredible capabilities both in the speed in which it can transmit data and the way it transmits data. Gone are the days when you need to ask your technical guru about which cables to use. With HDMI, it's one cable and you're ready to go for just about anything.

However, debate has also sprung up amongst enthusiasts and purists with regards to whether or not high end HDMI cables make a difference. The argument is simple: if HDMI is digital, what advantages would higher quality HDMI cables bring? Additionally, is there any point at all spending money on anything other than the cheapest and most basic cable?

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this question. Firstly, not all HDMI cables may be compatible or capable for the application. HDMI has only been around a relatively short time, yet at the time of writing we've already had 3 major updates post the initial release: V1.1-1.3. The latest standard alone, V1.3, has already had 3 versions: V1.3 a, b and c. Inevitably, the latest version will cost more than the earlier versions by the very fact that it's newer and up to date. While the version differences in the latter releases may be minimal, it is worth checking if the appliance requires a particular standard. Using a version lower than that required may be detrimental to quality or functionality.

Another consideration is the quality and design of the cable itself. The HDMI signal is in fact, extremely demanding on the cable. With any cable, the longer the run, the better the cable needs to be. In other words, the longer the cable, the more interference and noise is induced into the cable. Cables are manufactured and tested only on the length they are designed. If a short run of cable were to be extended, there is no guarantee that the cable would keep its performance, or in extreme cases, if it would work at all. This means that if a poorly controlled manufacturing/testing process were to be used to produce the cable (e.g. from a low quality brand), then the quality of a cable would certainly make a difference.

The last point to consider is HDMI's built in ability for error correction. It is true that there is some capability for error correction in HDMI's design. However, this does not apply to video or audio. When used with a compatible appliance, the error correction will simply attempt to guess what the signal could have been. This means that errors will still occur if not transmitted correctly. While the probability of errors is certainly reduced with superior design of the HDMI signal, it is by no means error free. A better quality cable would therefore reduce the chance of this occurring.

In an ideal world, there would be no difference between a quality HDMI cable and an ordinary one. Unfortunately in the real world this is not the case. There are always bad products, good products and better products. The good news is that the difference between the performance of these products is becoming more and more marginal. If you are looking to buy a cable to connect your flat-screen TV, it's certainly worth getting a quality cable. However, there is also no longer any need to go overboard.

HDMI Connections Over Long Distance

HDMI Connections Over Long Distance

Hdmi

Background:

Upgrades from CRT based to HDTV have been rapid and as HDTV technology continues to mature, consumers will begin to update the 2nd and even 3rd TV sets to HDTV. HDMI is the de-facto standard in connecting HD source to the HDTV. In some special applications, especially with projectors, the cable lengths can exceed 50ft and require specialized connectivity solutions. We will present some solutions for distributing HDMI over long distances.

Possible Solutions :

HDMI Extenders:

In applications where HDMI cabling is readily available and easily installed, a convenient solution for extending HDMI reach is to install a HDMI Extender at the end of the HDMI cable. Most HDMI extenders work by adaptive equalization and compensates for frequency varying signal attenuations, and timing skew. For most applications where connection lengths are between 35-75ft, using HDMI Extender is recommended.

HDMI over Ethernet:

It is possible to distribute HDMI over a pair of standard Ethernet cables by using HDMI to Ethernet converters. The HDMI Ethernet converter enables transmission of 1080P HD HDMI digital video and audio over a pair of standard Ethernet CAT5/6 cables.

Using HDMI over Ethernet Transceiver allows installers to use standard CAT 5/ 6 cables for ease of installation.

Advantages of using HDMI over Ethernet:

-Ethernet cables and connectors are easily field terminated thus allowing installers to easily install the proper length cable needed for ultimate flexibility and eliminate logistics problems of having custom length HDMI cables. No need top pre-measure and customer order cables.

-Allows transmission of 300ft (1080i) and 150ft (1080p) over Ethernet cables. CAT 6 cable is recommended for 1080P and best performance.

Conclusion:

As the HDTV market continues to mature, consumers will need to be educated on the HDTV video connections available. We have presented some possible solutions for distributing HDMI over long cable runs, so the consumer can make intelligent choices in selecting the HDTV video connections.

Hdmi

Samsung seems to be giving us every opportunity to get ready for the 3D trend in Home Entertainment. Along with its recent introduction of 3DTVs, Samsung has produced a great line up of 3D Blu-ray Players. The BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player is the entry level model that is Wireless LAN 'Ready', has internal decoding of Dolby and DTS soundtracks and access to Samsung Apps for streaming online content. Providing you with innovative features at a very reasonable and affordable price.

The BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player is only 1.7 inches thick, with a a stylish black high glossy finish. The control buttons, once powered on, will light up; making them easier to use. The buttons are located on the right side of the player. The Blu-ray 3D logo on top of the player also glows once the player is turned on. There is a USB Port just below the power button on the right. On the left side of the player is the disc loading tray.

VIDEO QUALITY: The Samsung BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player will provide you with great images. Video connections include HDMI (ver 1.4), Component Video Output and Composite Video Outputs. The best possible images will be with a HDMI connection which is capable of Full HD 1080p video on Blu-ray Discs and 1080p up-conversion when playing back DVDs. The Ultra Fast Play feature, should allow you to load these discs in less than 15 seconds, according to Samsung. Samsung has also conveniently equipped the player with it's Screen Fit feature which can automatically convert 21:9 aspect ratio movies to 16:9 aspect. A great feature if you if want to eliminate those annoying black bars on the Television screen.

AUDIO QUALITY: The BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player provides you with the latest 7.1-channel studio-quality surround sound (via. HDMI) with high resolution audio formats. You can connect the audio through one of the following outputs, HDMI (ver.1.4), Optical Digital Output, or Analog Audio Output 2.0-ch. It has internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio. The player can also, transmit the audio in bitstream if you want the audio decoding done by your A/V receiver. However, it does not have 7.1 analog outputs, so those with older non-HDMI A/V receivers, the BD-C5900 may not be the best option.

The BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player is one of the rare entry level models that is equipped with the new video processing technology that supports 3D playback. It can provide great high definition 3D images found on 3D Blu-ray discs. Of course you will require a 3DTV and 3D glasses in order to enjoy 3D entertainment at home. While not necessary, it is recommended that you connect the player to one of Samsung's 3D HDTVs. This will allow you to take advantage of Samsung's Anynet+ feature, giving you control of all Samsung's audio and video devices with one remote control.

This will allow you to enjoy music, movies and photos from your computer, camera and mobile devices, on your TV screen. Supported files formats include MP3, DivX, Divx HD, JPEG, JPEG HD, MKV, or AVCHD. The BD-C5900 is Profile 2.0, so it has BD-Live support. You can download content from a certain Blu-ray Discs. Content such as deleted scenes, current movie trailers, features, movie trivia, chat rooms, live commentary and much more. There is no internal memory, so an external USB flash drive is required if you want to download BD-Live content.

THE PROS: The BD-5900 Blu-ray Player from Samsung is very similar to the BD-C5500 Blu-ray Player which was released earlier this year. The big difference between the two players is that the BD-C5900 has 3D Blu-ray capability. It also is Wi-Fi 'Ready', BD-Live 'Ready', and is DLNA certified. Supports online media services: Internet-TV/Samsung Apps(provides content from Netflix, Pandora, Vudu, Blockbuster, Picasa and Twitter). Has internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus.

THE CONS: To enjoy 3D at home, you will need to have a 3D TV and 3D glasses. It is only WI-FI 'Ready', so you have to purchase a wireless LAN Adapter. No internal memory for Storage and to access BD-Live content. A USB external memory device is needed.

THE FINAL WORD: The Samsung BD-C5900 3D Blu-ray Player provides great audio and video quality. It has great features such as Online Streaming and DLNA support. It lacks some of the features of higher end models, but it is one of the cheapest 3D Blu-ray Players on the market. This alone should make the BD-C5900 an appealing option for those wanting to enjoy 3D Movies at home. -- Price you should look for when purchasing -- Under 0.00
